How well a facade insulation system performs isn’t determined solely by the type and thickness of the insulation material.

Just as important is the design of the whole system: the adhesive and mechanical fixing, the connections around window and door openings, the plinth, the cornices, the structural junctions, and the correct execution of the final facade surface.

A facade insulation system works properly when the building’s thermal envelope is as continuous as possible, and each connection is executed technically correctly.

This is why good facade insulation is not simply gluing insulation boards to a wall, but the professional execution of a complete facade system.

Facade Finishing

The outer surface of the insulation system doesn’t just determine the building’s appearance — the final surface is also part of the insulation system’s protection against the weather.

Several finishes can be created to match the facade’s character and the system used.

Fine-Plaster Facade

A facade finished with a thin coat or fine plaster is one of the most commonly used solutions.

A wide range of grain sizes, structures and colours allows the facade to match the building’s architectural appearance.

For a durable result, however, the following matter:

Structured Facade Surfaces

Alongside traditional uniform plaster, facade surfaces with a custom structure and texture can also be created.

Using different plastering techniques, grain sizes, surface structures and articulation, the facade can take on its own architectural character.

For this kind of finish, planning the work in advance and, where needed, preparing a sample surface is especially important, since the structure, colour and method of application together determine the finished facade’s appearance.

On larger continuous surfaces, work organisation also plays a significant role in achieving an even result.

Clinker-Tile Facade

Clinker tiling can provide a durable, characterful facade finish that withstands heavy use.

It can be used on an entire facade or on selected featured parts of the building, for example:

When clinker tiling is applied over an insulation system, it is especially important that the whole layer build-up, the bonding and the mechanical fixing follow the specifications of the chosen system designed for this purpose.

The choice of the right material can be influenced by, among other things:

We don’t just choose an insulation material on its own — a complete facade system suited to the specific building has to be designed.

Preparation matters especially in renovation

Before insulating an existing building, the condition of the facade must be properly assessed.

How well the existing plaster adheres, and the condition of any cracks, dampness, salt efflorescence and earlier repairs, determines what preparation is needed before the new insulation system is applied.

Without removing loose or inadequately load-bearing layers, repairing defects and preparing the substrate, even the best-quality insulation system will not give a lasting result.

In renovation, it is also necessary to think through how the existing cornices, flashing, eaves, railings, canopies, plinths, window and door openings, and any pipes or equipment mounted on the facade connect with the new, thicker facade build-up.

The facade is a single system

It’s worth planning the facade insulation and the final appearance together, before construction even begins.

A fine-plaster, structured or clinker-tiled facade can require different detailing, a different work process, and even a different insulation system build-up.

That’s why the final surface shouldn’t just be a decoration chosen at the end of construction — it needs to be known already when the layer build-up and junctions are being designed.

This way, the insulation’s energy-performance role and the facade’s architectural appearance can be realised as one coordinated system.
